For sufferers of stiff necks, lower back pain and aching shoulders, there are few if any better options for pain relief than a deep tissue massage. Although it is an understandable reflex response to reach for the painkillers when such a problem is causing you to wince, there can be no doubt that going it alone with painkillers is a risky and counter-productive step. For one thing, medication will only numb the pain and not do anything to control the cause. A deep tissue massage works for such problems because they are caused by problems in the muscle of the area. The pain and stiffness is caused by adhesions in the muscle – tight bands of muscular tissue which do not move as freely as they should.
